Sun Opens Access To 1,600 Patents
Sun Microsystems today announced the largest single release of patent innovations into the open source community by any organization to date, marking a significant shift in the way Sun positions its intellectual property portfolio. By giving open source developers free access to Sun OpenSolaris related patents under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL), the company is fostering open innovation and establishing a leadership role in the framework of a patent commons that will be recognized across the globe.
Reader Feedback: Page 1 of 1

RMS has commented on this: "Perhaps Sun will eventually give substance to its words, and make this step a real one like IBM's. Perhaps some other large companies will take similar steps. Would this make free software safe from the danger of software patents? Would the problem of software patents be solved? Not on your life. Neither one."

Sun has left IBM behind again.
Hopefully Microsoft, HP, and Oracle will follow suit.
Sun has shown repetetively their commitment to open source community, donated enormous amount of code, wonder why that doesnt effect their bottom-line!

Note that these patents are only released under CDDL and so can't be used for Linux. Also, IBM already pledged last summer not to assert any of its 40,000 patents against Linux.

When will this action commence?
