Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software, today announced that IONA Technologies has licensed and deployed the Black Duck™ Protex platform to ensure the proper use and validation of open source code in IONA’s product development organization. IONA developers, managers and legal counsel use Protex to increase the efficiency of the development process by evaluating open source licenses, security issues and other potential complications related to open source code assembly.
“IONA is constantly looking to add efficiencies to the development process and to improve our Artix, Fuse and Orbix product lines. For that reason we were eager to adopt Black Duck’s Protex,” said Stephanos Bacon, vice president of product development, IONA Technologies. “Beyond providing assurance we are building our products the right way, Protex fits seamlessly into the way our developers create their applications; it does not interfere with the development process.”
IONA is one of hundreds of companies that have incorporated open source software into their development processes to increase development efficiency and build better software. IONA developers rely on Protex to ensure that code fragments, files or entire components are integrated into a code base in a way that adheres to IONA’s open source policies. The policies set guidelines for use of open source code based on such considerations as compliance with open source licenses, known security issues, or status of open source community support for certain applications or software versions.
“We are witnessing widespread adoption of Black Duck’s solutions, and that proves that more and more innovative companies are establishing guidelines for use of open source within application development,” said Douglas Levin, chief executive officer of Black Duck Software. “Enterprise software companies, such as IONA, have incorporated Protex into their development lifecycles, and they benefit from streamlined use of open source code.”
Protex is an integral part of Black Duck’s product line, which comprises the industry’s most comprehensive array of products and services for finding, managing and confidently deploying open source software.
