VisitPittsburgh Announces 2006 Travel and Tourism Partner Awards

PITTSBURGH, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- VisitPittsburgh announced the recipients of its 2006 Travel & Tourism Partner Awards. The awards, which recognize outstanding contributions to the region's convention, travel and tourism industry, were presented at VisitPittsburgh's Annual Meeting, which took place at the Senator John Heinz Regional History Center on Thursday, March 29.

VisitPittsburgh presented its Tourism Partner of the Year Award to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. As it traveled throughout Europe in 2006, the symphony's stellar reputation presented a tangible sign of Pittsburgh's status as a tourist destination by promoting the city's musical excellence. VisitPittsburgh co-hosted a reception at the London concert, which was attended by U.K. tour operators and travel media members. This award celebrates outstanding collaboration with the tourism efforts of VisitPittsburgh.

Lorna and Larry Hundt of Great Canadian Holidays Inc. were named Travel & Tourism Advocates of the Year. Planned during 2006, the Canadian tour company brought 750 senior citizens from Ontario, Canada, on a fun-filled "Mystery Tour" of Pittsburgh. After 12 years of running this promotion, the Pittsburgh tour set records for attendance and satisfaction. This award recognizes great dedication to building group tourism alliances.

The Marketing Partner of the Year Award was presented to Donna Weisseg, special events and group sales manager for Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. Donna remains active and engaged in VisitPittsburgh's Partnership Committee, is consistently involved in all of its events and does an outstanding job promoting all four Carnegie venues to meeting planners. This award recognizes a partner who has shown outstanding willingness to support VisitPittsburgh's efforts.

VisitPittsburgh presented its Convention & Meetings Partner Award to Ron Ashburn, executive director of the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST). This award goes to Ron for repeatedly assuring that Pittsburgh is part of AIST's permanent rotation. This award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the success of the Pittsburgh region's convention and meetings industry.

Chris Pike, vice president and general manager of KDKA-TV and WPCW Pittsburgh, is the recipient of VisitPittsburgh's Media Partner Award. Thanks to Chris' efforts, VisitPittsburgh's Local Awareness Campaign received a necessary boost through the production and airing of television spots aimed at enlightening Pittsburgh residents as to VisitPittsburgh's mission and the valuable contribution it makes to the region. This award recognizes media efforts that reflect the mission and efforts of VisitPittsburgh.
