Netflix Focuses Attention on a Variety of Open Source Projects

Netflix, as we know it today, wouldn’t exist if not for Amazon.

That’s because the world’s largest over-the-top provider relies on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deliver its content digitally. In doing so, Netflix has worked to make AWS more reliable so as to provide a more resilient service to its customers.

The company has embraced open source philosophies, working to improve AWS via its NetflixOSS projects, which are then shared for the public to see, use and build off of, accordingly. Neftlix now offers open source solutions relating to cloud management, availability, persistence systems, infrastructure services, platform libraries and more. Let’s take a look at some of them:

  • STAASH (Storage as a Service over HTTP): A language- and storage-agnostic Web interface, STAASH gives programmers the ability to leverage cloud-based backend storage without a second thought so that they are able to direct all of their attention on the data itself. In other words, the complexity of the underlying system is hidden from view, and developers can focus on the most integral parts of their projects instead.
  • Chaos Monkey: Under the umbrella of the Simian Army, a suite of tools designed to ensure optimal cloud operation, falls Chaos Monkey, the first such tool that focuses on resiliency. Chaos Monkey causes failure throughout servers purposefully. Netflix’s engineers can then respond to these mishaps and get everything running again, with hopes that fixing these small failures will prevent larger, unplanned ones in the future.
  • Ice: Keeping your cloud expenses under control is imperative, and Ice will help you do just that. The solution provides a macro view of such expenses, allowing decision makers to monitor usage patterns on any scale they see fit. Ice provides the information necessary to help business owners make informed decisions regarding their cloud strategies.
The fact that Netflix is embracing open source adoption is an encouraging one, and by listing its open source projects publicly, the company is providing interesting insight into its operations.

Every organization is facing their own Digital Transformation as they attempt to stay ahead of the competition, or worse, just keep up. Each new opportunity, whether embracing machine learning, IoT, or a cloud migration, seems to bring new development, deployment, and management models. The results are more diverse and federated computing models than any time in our history.

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...
