Openstack Solutions Ecosystem – Harnessing an Open Source Cloud Operating System

Openstack is an open source Cloud platform that vendors augment with additional plug-in products and value add services, and the goal of this white paper is to showcase what is currently available.

For example Cisco is one vendor who offers an Openstack implementation, on their UCS platform. This blog from Omar Sultan explains how it fits into their existing product strategy, including their existing Cloud components like Intelligent Automation and newly acquired Virtuata and vCider.

An essential skill set and tool set area is the process of migrating legacy apps to the Cloud. Gigaspaces offer Cloudify, and in this blog describe Migrating from Amazon to Openstack, a contentious issue recently in the Openstack blogosphere.

Nati Shalom makes a critical point about their product, that it makes SaaS-enablement possible without code changes, a critical point for both ISVs as well as Enterprise Architects, for the same reasons of scalability of important enterprise apps, streamlined delivery and user billing and reporting.

Openstack G-Cloud

To achieve the solutions part we will build the white paper around a specific industry scenarios, such as how it can be used for G-Clouds: Government Cloud Computing.

In particular we are using the latest roadmap planning document from the Government of Canada as a reference framework, as it describes a strategy for adopting Openstack around a vision of an ‘Open Source Cloud Operating System’. Read more in this initial briefing guide here.

This explains their rational for such a strategy, interestingly including the impacts that could be felt if they don’t standardize on such a platform, including:

  • Disjointed IaaS technology stacks
  • Redundant investment in element managers
  • Multiple independent technology pillars each with their own lock-in constraints
  • Increased training costs
  • Inconsistent service levels due to unbalanced skills and expertise across the stovepipes
  • Reduced agility
  • More procurement constraints and contract confusion
  • Lack of a clear cohesive vision to our partner departments/agencies and vendor ecosystem
