SEBASTOPOL, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/12/14 -- Some of the biggest technology companies as well as innovative maker-led startups will leverage the inaugural MakerCon stage to announce new products, new partnerships and new initiatives. Senior executives from Intel, Autodesk and GE, among others, will make announcements and demo their latest technology to provide maker pros with the tools they need to take their products to the commercial marketplace. The first MakerCon, presented by Intel, will be held at the Oracle Conference Center in Redwood City on May 13-14, the week leading up to Maker Faire in the Bay Area, May 17-18 in San Mateo.
"Wearable computing is an accelerating phenomenon that is re-defining how people use and interact with information," said Dale Dougherty, CEO and founder of Maker Media. "We're pleased that Mike Bell, vice president and general manager of Intel's New Devices Group, will provide an update on Intel's strategy to create platforms ready to be used by inventors and entrepreneurs in the development of wearable products and other small form factor creations with its Intel® Galileo and Intel® Edison development platforms."
In addition, twenty startup companies will display and demo new projects, prototypes and products in the Innovation Showcase on Tuesday evening at MakerCon. These include 3D printer company PrintrBot, STEM education startup LightUp, home automation startup Lithouse, Fit3D's body scanner, AtFab CNC open source furniture, and Driblet Labs' smart water meter.

Autodesk CEO Carl Bass, who last year announced Fusion 360, a cloud-based CAD tool, will make an announcement during his keynote presentation. Other companies planning announcements include GE, Appliances and Lights; MbientLab; and ShopBot.
In addition, Intel will present the findings from the next wave of their joint research project with Maker Media that profiles maker pros' usage of tools and technology. This next project explores their use of the cloud as a collaboration platform and prototype workflow scenarios. Findings include the emergence of the cloud as a low-cost design and prototyping platform with nearly 70% of respondents reporting use of the cloud in some manner.
Make: and Deloitte Center for the Edge will also host a roundtable to further explore the impact of making on manufacturing, education, government policy, citizen science and retail. The feedback will be used to expand the current draft of a joint white paper titled "Impact of the Maker Movement."
During the course of the two-day conference, 10 keynotes, 44 sessions and 4 workshops will be available to the nearly 500 makers who have registered for the premiere conference. In addition to Carl Bass and Mike Bell, other keynotes include: Jeremy Ashley, vice president of Oracle Applications User Experience Group; Yancy Strickler, CEO of Kickstarter; Massimo Banzi, co-founder and CEO of Arduino; and, Mark Hatch, CEO of TechShop.
