Wind River and China Mobile Demonstrate NFV in Action at Mobile World Congress

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS – Wind River®, a world leader in delivering software for intelligent connected systems, has collaborated with China Mobile to develop a network functions virtualization (NFV) proof-of-concept showcasing a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) base station. The proof-of-concept will be demonstrated at Mobile World Congress 2014, and features Wind River Open Virtualization, a Type 2 hypervisor that delivers carrier grade open source real-time kernel virtualization running on an Intel-based server with a dedicated hardware accelerator.

The challenges typically associated with the NFV use case of a virtualized base station include the ability to reliability deliver low latency, high performance data processing in a near real time environment – while operating within a multi-application, virtualized environment. Using Wind River Open Virtualization, the proof-of-concept delivers a live demonstration of a successful C-RAN base station that delivers near native hardware performance, and closely follows the requirements of the ETSI NFV Industry Standards Group.

The virtualized C-RAN base stations run on Intel-based standard servers, virtualizing Layers 1, 2 and 3 functions. The demonstration highlights strict real-time execution and TD-LTE and GSM support. Through Wind River Open Virtualization, companies can quickly deploy commercial NFV applications such as a C-RAN with high performance and real-time virtualization, dramatically reducing time to market and operational expenses.

“With exponentially increasing data traffic pushing networks to their limits, NFV has emerged as an important approach in transforming network architectures to address new challenges. Operators are looking to deploy NFV technologies to enable flexible deployment of network applications and services,” said Mike Langlois, general manager of Networking and Communications at Wind River. “Wind River delivers carrier grade virtualization and enables operators and service providers to gain the flexibility, scalability, and cost and energy benefits cloud data centers already enjoy."

Wind River Open Virtualization optimizes open source Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) technology to allow the deployment of network services on virtual machines without the performance loss associated with using traditional, IT virtualization products. Meeting carrier grade requirements, Open Virtualization delivers near-native hardware performance speeds, whereas standard KVM maximum latency is typically several thousand percent higher than native results. Built from a Yocto Project-based infrastructure and delivering carrier grade virtualization, Open Virtualization is a Type 2 hypervisor that leverages the latest open source advancements. The NFV C-RAN proof-of-concept demonstration will be showcased at the China Mobile booth in Hall 3, Stand 3A10 at Mobile World Congress 2014. Separately, additional NFV technologies will be on display at the Wind River booth in Hall 7, Stand 7J65. While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of S...
