Big Switch Networks to Demonstrate OpenFlow Interoperability with HP

Big Switch Networks today announced that it will ensure interoperability between Big Switch Networks Open SDN Suite and HP OpenFlow-enabled switches, providing customers with certified solutions that they can confidently deploy in SDN environments.

The two companies will test interoperability between the Big Network Controller and Big Tap application, and HP’s OpenFlow-enabled switches, which represent the industry’s largest installed base of over 15 million ports. HP currently offers 29 OpenFlow-enabled switches. The interoperability will initially include the following product lines:

  • HP 2920 Switch Series – cost-effective basic layer 3 stackable GbE access switches delivering the industry’s highest performance, lowest latency and stacking failure recovery in its class1;
  • HP 3800 Switch Series – advanced mesh-stacking full layer 3 GbE access switches delivering the industry’s highest density performance and lowest latency in its class2;
  • HP 5400 zl Switch Series – full layer 3 modular switch for access and core deployments with integrated services; and
  • HP 5900 Switch Series – data center access switch delivering higher scalability, integrated FCoE, and a single software license.

As well as the Big Switch Open SDN Suite, including:

  • Big Network Controller – a platform to deploy a wide range of network applications, including data center network virtualization, providing unified network intelligence, enterprise-class scalability and high-availability
  • Big Tap – a network monitoring application for Open SDNs

In addition, Big Switch and HP will engage in joint marketing activities, developing solutions guides and reference designs to make it easier for clients and partners to deploy open SDN solutions based on interoperable solutions.

“Customers need complete SDN solution offerings – from the switch data plane, to the SDN controller, and to the SDN applications. Big Switch is excited to work with HP to provide integrated solutions to customers given their leadership in delivering the largest number of OpenFlow-enabled switches in the industry,” said Guido Appenzeller, CEO and co-founder of Big Switch Networks. “Together with our SDN controller and applications, HP and Big Switch will have the most comprehensive solution offering in the industry.”

“IT needs network agility without the barriers of manual network configurations to enable cloud environments,” said Bethany Mayer, senior vice president and general manager, Networking, HP. “HP delivers a complete software-defined networking solution including the largest install-base of OpenFlow switches, SDN controller and SDN applications. Interoperability testing will enable clients to have the choice and flexibility to complement the HP solution with our partner’s offerings.”
