SAN RAMON, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/26/13 -- Accela, Inc., the leading provider of web-, mobile-, and cloud-based software exclusively for government, announced today that the company will contribute as a Donor to the 2013 Fellowship Program of the non-profit, Code for America (CfA). Accela customers participating in the 2013 CfA Fellowship Program are Oakland, CA; New York; San Francisco; Kansas City, MO; Unified Government of Kansas City, KS; and San Mateo County, CA -- comprising more than half of this year's participating agencies.
Through the Fellowship Program, CfA recruits talented web developers, designers, and entrepreneurs for a year of public service and pairs them with municipalities throughout the country who are working to leverage technology and better engage the community. By opening new datasets, creating apps, and hosting events that engage residents -- both the Fellows and cities produce open-source apps that can be used by any agency nationwide, making a real difference for the community. The Fellows work with municipal government leaders, community groups, and residents to identify a challenge the community is facing and design technology solutions to remedy the issue.
"As providers of government software and mobile apps that enable government and citizens, Accela is delighted to be a Donor to the 2013 Code for America Fellowship Program," said Maury Blackman, Accela President and CEO. "We commend Code for America for establishing a completely new model for civic involvement, pairing the power of people and technology. We also applaud the Code for America Fellows who are giving a year of their time, skills, and talents to a significant and growing social movement."
Cities that partner with CfA solve problems using technology, and cultivate the next generation of tech-savvy, civic leaders. The non-profit operates with the understanding that cities today are under greater pressure and by leveraging the power of the web they can become more efficient, participatory, and transparent.
"Code for America is about technology and public service, but ultimately our organization and the Fellows who give a year of their lives to this cause simply believe that government can work for the people in the 21st century," said Jennifer Pahlka, Founder and Executive Director of Code for America. "We are grateful to Accela for enabling these bold experiments that show what's possible when government and citizens work together."
