Adblock Plus today announced the launch of the latest version of its popular ad-blocking software, designed to work on Android smartphones and tablets. The FREE app is available at the Google Play app store or from the AdblockPlus.org website, and is the first ad blocker for Android that doesn't require a rooted (jailbroken) phone.
The latest addition to the community-driven, open source Adblock Plus project comes in the form of a free app that users can download onto their Android smartphone or tablet, which will allow them to benefit from the same features as the Adblock Plus extension for Internet browsers.
Till Faida, Co-Founder of Adblock Plus comments; “Mobile devices have exploded over the past few years, and as usage of these devices has increased, so has advertising, which is becoming more and more intrusive. Mobile devices can feel more ‘personal’ than online browsing via a desktop device, making advertising on these devices even more intrusive and annoying when they interrupt browsing. And by blocking ads from rendering, Adblock Plus users can experience up to 40% faster browsing on their Android devices.”
Adblock Plus for mobile works exactly the same as the browser extension, blocking all intrusive ads on your Android device. It blocks all online advertising when browsing, and blocks in-app advertising in popular apps such as Facebook and Angry Birds.
The launch of the new platform demonstrates the changing face of the advertising market and the new ways in which organisations are looking to target individuals.
“With so many new technologies available, and advertisers reacting to these, it stimulates fresh debate for advertising across different channels to be evaluated, standardised and a set of acceptable rules implemented,” added Till.
Till concluded: “Mobile advertising is still incomparable to that which is online - despite the growth in mobile devices - but this is soon set to change. Ensure you’re protected before your device is bombarded with advertising.”

About Adblock Plus
Adblock Plus is a web extension that addresses annoying and intrusive online advertising by putting users in control. It allows defining filters that determine what a website is permitted to load, as well as provide a way to collapse unwanted sections of a web page.
There are currently more than 50 million Adblock Plus users across the world and it has been the most downloaded and the most used extension almost continuously since November 2006. PC World rated Adblock Plus as a top innovation in its 100 Best Products of 2007 list, and in March 2010 the project collected the Linux New Media award for the Best Open Source Firefox Extension.
