Systems of Innovation for Ongoing Digital Transformation Information technology (IT) advances are transforming the way we innovate in business, thereby disrupting the old guard and their predictable status-quo. It’s creating global market turbulence. Industries are converging, and new opportunities and threats are emerging, like never before. So, how are savvy chief information officers (CIOs) leading this transition? Back in 2015, the IBM Institute for Business Value conducted a market study that included the findings from over 1,800 CIO interviews from around the globe. The resulting insights are worthy of revisiting today, as we consider the digital business transformation outlook in 2017. Introduction to the Torchbearer CIO CIOs realize the barriers between formerly distinct industries are collapsing, as organizations in one sector apply their expertise to others ... (more)

Cloud Operating Model | @CloudExpo @JPMorgenthal #IoT #PaaS #AWS #Azure #OpenShift

Hard Choices Are Required When Adopting a Cloud Operating Model When was the last time you’ve ever heard anyone say “IT Applications & Operations”? Frankly, in my 30+ year career in IT, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard anyone use this term. The typical term we hear is IT Infrastructure & Operations. These two go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly, which tells us a lot about how we view the field of IT. For those that may not be familiar with the role of IT Operations, Joe Hertvik does a great job here of describing IT Operations Management as someone engaged in the role of providing this service to the business. As you can see it’s very interesting how he specifically addresses the gap between responsibilities regarding IT Applications and IT Operations as a Venn diagram in which there is no overlap. However, as we progress from a pre-Cloud Operating Model world t... (more)

Your Open Source Cloud Cocktail By @MRHinkle | @CloudExpo [@CitrixCloud]

CloudOpen 2014 – Mixing Your Open Source Cloud Cocktail Here’s the presentation I gave at the Linux Foundation’s CloudOpen in Dusseldorf on October 13, 2014 titled Mixing Your Open Source Cloud Cocktail Add two parts virtualization, one part orchestration add a little networking shake and pour. Unfortunately cloud computing isn’t that easy but then again not all clouds are the same and tastes may vary. This talk will discuss how the varying open source technologies like OpenStack, Docker, LXC and others can be mixed together to make something that appeals to the needs of a wide variety of users. There’s also no problem in abstaining from building your own cloud but still benefiting from the open source tooling to maximize the benefits of the public cloud. Slide deck here ... (more)

The Top 250 Players in the Cloud Computing Ecosystem

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010) being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time to give my earlier list a complete overhaul. Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the Cloud Ecosystem. I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing. Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

MySQL Ace To Run Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus Session at Cloud Expo Mårten Mickos, the guy who sold MySQL to Sun for a billion dollars, has got himself another company. Now all he has to do is find another sucker like Sun. Mårten, who wouldn't be Mårten without that cute little Finnish doohickey over his name, has been named CEO of Eucalyptus Systems, the open source private cloud start-up. Woody Rollins, who was CEO, has morphed into the company's CFO. Since leaving Sun and MySQL last year, Mårten has been at Benchmark Capital, which backed MySQL, as entrepreneur-in-residence trying to spot his next opportunity. As it happens Eucalyptus is a Benchmark investment. Benchmark led its $5.5 million first round. Mårten says that while he was at Benchmark he asked around and people identified only two real hot buttons: the cloud and the mobile Internet. Both of them are gonna be massively big, but he fe... The Disruptor Framework: A Concurrency Framework for Java

Let's start with the basic question: What is the disruptor? The disruptor is a concurrency framework for Java that allows data sharing between threads. The age old way of coding a producer-consumer model is to use a queue as the buffer area between the producer and the consumer, where the producer adds data objects to the queue, which are in turn processed by the consumer. However, such a model does not work well at the hardware level and ends up being highly inefficient. The disruptor in its simplest form replaces the queue with a data structure known as the ‘ring buffer'. Which brings us to the next question, what is the ring buffer? The ring buffer is an array of fixed length (which must be a power of 2), it's circular and wraps. This data structure is at the core of what makes the disruptor super fast. Let's explore a simple everyday scenario in enterprise archit... (more)

What Developers Need to Know About Open Source Vulnerability Management

As a resourceful developer, you're not writing code from scratch anymore. You probably have access to a vast amount of code you wrote at previous jobs, and a lot of your development probably relies at least in some part around third party or open source software. Every savvy developer knows their way around Sourceforge, Codeplex, or GitHub, and with access to readily available code that frees you up to tackle real challenges, there really is no downside to open source code. Sure, you're probably aware that many open source projects have license obligations tied to them. And licenses are not generally written for developer consumption, so you may be part of a growing contingent of developers that doesn't care about them, but it's likely that your manager cares. With the increasing complexity of software, organizations are more cognizant than ever about the potenti... (more)

Arthur Ryman's Eclipse Blog: Pro JST Hits the Bookstores

Pro JST Hits the Bookstores I've always gotten a minor thrill when I wandered into a bookstore and saw something I wrote on the shelves. Well, I got an even better feeling this weekend when I saw Pro JST sitting there. Seeing your own writing published is nice, but it's nicer still when other people write about projects you work on. JST is the J2EE Standard Tools subproject of the Eclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP) project. Pro JST is the first book published about WTP and it focuses on developing J2EE applications. The book was written by Chris Judd and Hakeem Shittu. Chris is certainly a WTP expert. He gave a virtuoso performance on all aspects of WTP at the recent EclipseWorld conference in New York. Chris has also become a WTP contributor and is working on our online Help. In fact, I'll make a standing offer to anyone who contributes to WTP - I'll plug your books! I... (more)

When growing capacity and power in the data center, the architectural trade-offs between server scale-up vs. scale-out continue to be debated. Both approaches are valid: scale-out adds multiple, smaller servers running in a distributed computing model, while scale-up adds fewer, more powerful servers that are capable of running larger workloads. It’s worth noting that there are additional, unique advantages that scale-up architectures offer. One big advantage is large memory and compute capacity...

The current age of digital transformation means that IT organizations must adapt their toolset to cover all digital experiences, beyond just the end users’. Today’s businesses can no longer focus solely on the digital interactions they manage with employees or customers; they must now contend with non-traditional factors. Whether it's the power of brand to make or break a company, the need to monitor across all locations 24/7, or the ability to proactively resolve issues, companies must adapt to...
