The API Is the New CLI

Infrastructure 2.0, from a purely developmental standpoint, is about APIs. It’s about offering up the functionality and capabilities of a wide variety of infrastructure – network, storage, and application network – to be externally controlled, integrated, and leveraged for whatever purpose a developer might dream up. It enables providers and enterprises alike to turn infrastructure functionality into services. Need compression? Caching? Routing? Load balancing? Via service-enabled management APIs these can become services, provisioned and released through the invocation of a service. When expanded to include the sharing of actionable data – performance statistics, status, availability of application services (context!) – this integration becomes the mechanism through which a dynamic infrastructure is created. One that reacts to events and conditions in the network, storage, application network, and application infrastructure in real-time.

RightScale Gets More Portable

Young as it is, RightScale, the cloud manager, is on to its next-generation platform.

Its ServerTemplate widgetry will now automatically configure servers on specific clouds, system architectures and operating systems, something it didn’t do before.

It should let users take advantage of the specific features and functionality offered by each cloud provider, beginning with Amazon and Rackspace, while retaining portability.

IBM Fails to Stop Its M&A Chief from Working at Dell

A New York appeals court said the other day that David Johnson, the ex-IBM M&A chief poached by Dell in May and sued by IBM to make him honor his non-compete – which he intentionally signed in the wrong place to get out from under – can work for Dell. The courts weren’t happy with IBM. The district court that was asked for an injunction called IBM’s tactics “vexatious” and “a great disservice to the interests of Mr. Johnson and of the court in the orderly conduct of this litigation.”

New-Generation Virtualization Technologies with Ultra Low-Cost Endpoints

Cloud-based computing infrastructures deliver broad-based functionality to end users in far-flung locales but too often the destination device remains a PC. Developments in virtual desktop technology are creating a new generation of ultra low-cost endpoints such as network monitors, set-top boxes, next-generation netbooks, and kiosks. These devices can deliver a full multimedia experience over the cloud, and enable subscription-based and application-specific computing services.

New CloudSwitch Blog for Enterprise Cloud Computing

Welcome to our enterprise cloud computing blog where we'll share our perspectives on cloud computing trends and best practices for the enterprise. We're a team with extensive experience in IT software and systems (learn more about us), and we're passionate about the opportunity that cloud computing offers for fundamentally improving enterprise IT. However, we believe that before the cloud can reach its potential, some innovation needs to take place within the enterprise data center to make cloud computing simple, secure and tightly integrated with existing IT infrastructure. Our mission is to do just that. We tend to see the world from the data center out, unlike much of the innovation around cloud computing to date, which has focused on the cloud as a separate and silo'd environment.

Robert Moffat ain’t running IBM’s systems business, its chips or its supply chain and he ain’t serving as an officer of the company following his arrest Friday on criminal charges that he disclosed confidential inside information on AMD, Sun and IBM itself to a hedge fund ring that was trading on the secrets.

He has been temporarily placed on a leave of absence while he sorts his life out.

Saas-Based Time and Cost Reductions in the Cloud

Like everything else in the cloud, software as a service (SaaS) is most commonly delivered in a Web browser and paid for based on usage; the more you use software, the more it tends to cost. However, the economic benefits of SaaS really fall into two categories. The first category is the cost savings to actually customize and deploy the software relative to traditional methods. The second category is the top- and bottom-line benefits to your business realized because of the advantages of cloud-based software.

The Case for Single-Purpose Services

Justifying the extra investment for developing a single-purpose service – a service expected to solve only one large business problem - instead of putting the single-purpose logic inside a non-service-oriented application can be challenging. Reuse, the most popular motivation for creating services, will not apply. So where's the business case? Acceptable justifications can include: enabling support for multiple providers, isolating logic from change, centralizing IT-support for a given business process, service composition optimization, and separation of concerns. Although performance is commonly referenced as a reason to not create services, that line of thought is not always valid.

With the help of patterns referenced from the recently published SOA Design Patterns book [REF-1] and the soapatterns.org site [REF-17], this article will delve into these issues as we explore the case for the single-purpose service.

How To Remove WS-Security Tokens From a SOAP Message

After you've validated a UsernameToken, or checked an XML Signature, it is often good practice to then strip out the WS-Security blocks containing items like tokens and signatures, before sending them downstream to a Web Service. In some cases, you are stripping these out because you don't want the password to remain in the message. In other cases, you may know that the downstream Web Service will choke on the WS-Security block. It also makes the message smaller.

Cloud-Oriented Switch Start-up Valued at $230M

Like any pleased-with-herself three-and-a-half-year-old showing off her lace panties, start-up switch house Blade Network Technologies was flaunting its heady $230 million valuation Wednesday after closing a $10 million B round.

The largely institutional round – and let’s remember traditional VCs are ducking down any convenient rat hole these days – was led by NEC with help from Blade OEM Juniper Networks, existing Blade backer Garnett & Helfrich Capital – ex-Oracle lieutenant Terry Garnett’s venture buyout operation – and a mysterious silent investor, reportedly a big tech company that doesn’t want people to know where its money is going.

How utterly beguiling. A veiled lady in a little black dress.

The Coolness That is HTML 5

At the moment I am working on what I think is a very cool project: a book on HTML 5.

There is so much news about HTML 5 that I thought I would use this blog to kind of pull together some of the emerging features. If you are new to HTML 5, then let me give you the nickel tour.

HTML 4 and XHTML were the last official versions of the HTML language (you know, that code you view when you right click in the Web browser and choose "show code"). It has been 12 years since the last upgrade. In that time we have had AJAX (or Ajax) for Web 2.0, Flash and SilverLight for Rich Internet Applications and this thing called the iPhone that have all shaken up the way we use the Web.

Is Your Company a Thriver, a Survivor, or a Hider?

A new survey of 300 European enterprise IT decision makers shows IT innovators are beating the recession. Results of the 2009 European IT Survey1, sponsored by BMC Software, reveal that one in four companies – the Thrivers - are beating the recession by focusing on improving their IT organization’s operational efficiency and reinvesting those cost savings into strategic IT projects that drive new business. Many of the surveyed CIOs highlighted their belief that sustained IT investment is strongly linked to overall business performance.

The survey also reflected interesting differences between the approaches to IT investment and innovation in the three countries. For example, German companies are the most consistent in their approach to innovation. They typically spend 24 percent of their IT budgets on innovation with a drop in spend of only 8 percent on average. In comparison, French companies are the most cautious; with innovation spend decreasing by 17 percent in the downturn. The UK has the most enthusiastic sentiment towards innovation, with 67 percent prioritizing innovation and 77 percent innovating in good and bad times.

Free Software Foundation Waves Developers Off Mono & C#

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) doesn’t like Microsoft, doesn’t like software patents, it especially doesn’t like Microsoft’s patents, and it doesn’t trust the two of them in the same room together.

It’s convinced that Microsoft is eventually going to sue any open source developer who uses Mono, the Novell-supported open source version of Microsoft’s .NET widgetry, or who writes open source programs in C#, the Microsoft development language.

It’s warning off developers now because Microsoft has added both C# and Mono – or rather the ECMA 334 and 335 standards that embrace them – to its two-year-old irrevocable, legally binding Community Promise not to sue.
Virtualization 2.0 Is All About Manageability

With virtual infrastructures becoming prevalent in production environments and often supporting critical business services, the second phase of virtualization is here. In Virtualization 2.0, it's all about manageability. The shifting emphasis to business service management rather than just virtual machine management means that it is no longer sufficient to simply monitor the uptime or resource usage of virtual machines and servers and believe that the entire IT infrastructure is working well.

Web Services Manifesto - RESTful Architecture and Programmable Web

I don't need to go into too much detail here about what exactly REST is - I know that most of the readers of this blog are well versed in Web Services technologies and architectural patterns. The thing that I want to cover is that REST is an architectural decision, it is not a protocol or a wire format or even an industry standard. It is a set of recommendations for how you organize the information exposed by your Web Services. Before I go into detail here, I personally think that REST is the way to go. Unless you have a particular need to be strapped into the SOAP/WS-* roller coaster, your Web Service should be exposing resources via RESTful URLs. I can't imagine why people would chose not to do so.

White Paper: "Infrastructure Optimization via Desktop Virtualization"

To address this issue of improving capacity utilization, more and more companies and information technology departments are implementing infrastructure solutions, such as server and storage consolidation through virtualization. With the promise of a new day rising upon the desktop environment, companies are taking a 'return-to-the-mainframe' mentality, leveraging these same solutions, and in many cases, the same IT skills, to re-deploy desktops. Via mainframe-inspired System x x86 server hardware located within the datacenter, the entire desktop operating system and application stack can be virtualized, delivering the complete multimedia experience that users have become accustomed to, but without the security concerns and spiraling management costs of the traditional 'fat client' PC approach.

The Missing Piece in Cloud Computing: Middleware Virtualization

To achieve the full potential of 'cloud computing' we need a broader definition of virtualization, and that is the complete de-coupling of the logical components of an application (represented by the software stack) and the physical resources. In the case of middleware, whether it is data access, messaging or the business logic, the physical location of the resources should not matter to the developer and to the end user. This is not a trivial thing to do, especially when it comes to data-intensive, stateful (transactional or otherwise) applications and services. In this session we will explore the challenges and propose a solution, including a live demo.
