The API Is the New CLI

Infrastructure 2.0, from a purely developmental standpoint, is about APIs. It’s about offering up the functionality and capabilities of a wide variety of infrastructure – network, storage, and application network – to be externally controlled, integrated, and leveraged for whatever purpose a developer might dream up. It enables providers and enterprises alike to turn infrastructure functionality into services. Need compression? Caching? Routing? Load balancing? Via service-enabled management APIs these can become services, provisioned and released through the invocation of a service. When expanded to include the sharing of actionable data – performance statistics, status, availability of application services (context!) – this integration becomes the mechanism through which a dynamic infrastructure is created. One that reacts to events and conditions in the network, storage, application network, and application infrastructure in real-time.

IBM Fails to Stop Its M&A Chief from Working at Dell

A New York appeals court said the other day that David Johnson, the ex-IBM M&A chief poached by Dell in May and sued by IBM to make him honor his non-compete – which he intentionally signed in the wrong place to get out from under – can work for Dell. The courts weren’t happy with IBM. The district court that was asked for an injunction called IBM’s tactics “vexatious” and “a great disservice to the interests of Mr. Johnson and of the court in the orderly conduct of this litigation.”

Justifying the extra investment for developing a single-purpose service – a service expected to solve only one large business problem - instead of putting the single-purpose logic inside a non-service-oriented application can be challenging. Reuse, the most popular motivation for creating services, will not apply. So where's the business case? Acceptable justifications can include: enabling support for multiple providers, isolating logic from change, centralizing IT-support for a given business process, service composition optimization, and separation of concerns. Although performance is commonly referenced as a reason to not create services, that line of thought is not always valid. With the help of patterns referenced from the recently published SOA Design Patterns book [REF-1] and the soapatterns.org site [REF-17], this article will delve into these issues as we explore the case for the single-purpose service.

After you've validated a UsernameToken, or checked an XML Signature, it is often good practice to then strip out the WS-Security blocks containing items like tokens and signatures, before sending them downstream to a Web Service. In some cases, you are stripping these out because you don't want the password to remain in the message. In other cases, you may know that the downstream Web Service will choke on the WS-Security block. It also makes the message smaller.

At the moment I am working on what I think is a very cool project: a book on HTML 5. There is so much news about HTML 5 that I thought I would use this blog to kind of pull together some of the emerging features. If you are new to HTML 5, then let me give you the nickel tour. HTML 4 and XHTML were the last official versions of the HTML language (you know, that code you view when you right click in the Web browser and choose "show code"). It has been 12 years since the last upgrade. In that time we have had AJAX (or Ajax) for Web 2.0, Flash and SilverLight for Rich Internet Applications and this thing called the iPhone that have all shaken up the way we use the Web.

A new survey of 300 European enterprise IT decision makers shows IT innovators are beating the recession. Results of the 2009 European IT Survey1, sponsored by BMC Software, reveal that one in four companies – the Thrivers - are beating the recession by focusing on improving their IT organization’s operational efficiency and reinvesting those cost savings into strategic IT projects that drive new business. Many of the surveyed CIOs highlighted their belief that sustained IT investment is strongly linked to overall business performance. The survey also reflected interesting differences between the approaches to IT investment and innovation in the three countries. For example, German companies are the most consistent in their approach to innovation. They typically spend 24 percent of their IT budgets on innovation with a drop in spend of only 8 percent on average. In comparison, French companies are the most cautious; with innovation spend decreasing by 17 percent in the downturn. The UK has the most enthusiastic sentiment towards innovation, with 67 percent prioritizing innovation and 77 percent innovating in good and bad times.

EMC Buys Kazeon

In its second purchase in two days EMC said late Tuesday that it was buying eDiscovery shop Kazeon Systems Inc, whose software is used by corporations, law firms, government agencies and legal service providers. Terms were not disclosed and are too immaterial to impact EMC’s results this year. The transaction is expected to close by the end of September.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) doesn’t like Microsoft, doesn’t like software patents, it especially doesn’t like Microsoft’s patents, and it doesn’t trust the two of them in the same room together. It’s convinced that Microsoft is eventually going to sue any open source developer who uses Mono, the Novell-supported open source version of Microsoft’s .NET widgetry, or who writes open source programs in C#, the Microsoft development language. It’s warning off developers now because Microsoft has added both C# and Mono – or rather the ECMA 334 and 335 standards that embrace them – to its two-year-old irrevocable, legally binding Community Promise not to sue. I don't need to go into too much detail here about what exactly REST is - I know that most of the readers of this blog are well versed in Web Services technologies and architectural patterns. The thing that I want to cover is that REST is an architectural decision, it is not a protocol or a wire format or even an industry standard. It is a set of recommendations for how you organize the information exposed by your Web Services. Before I go into detail here, I personally think that REST is the way to go. Unless you have a particular need to be strapped into the SOAP/WS-* roller coaster, your Web Service should be exposing resources via RESTful URLs. I can't imagine why people would chose not to do so.

Sun Expects Q4 Earnings Above Estimates

On Tuesday evening Sun issued a fourth-quarter guidance range largely above analysts' estimates. The company pre-announced that revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter ended June was $3.725 billion to $3.8 billion, with gross margin in the 44-45% range. Sun expects non-GAAP profits of 25-35 cents a share. Some analysts nonetheless had been looking for $3.8 billion and 27 cents.
