In an increasingly interconnected business world, everything is becoming a service. Today even manufactured products are services and managing these services is a challenge. Service Management for Dummies, a just released Dummies series book written by Hurwitz & Associates analysts, Judith Hurwitz, Robin Bloor, Marcia Kaufman, and Fern Halper, clarifies what Service Management is all about. The book takes a common-sense approach to explain the scope of IT services covering everything from understanding the importance of standards and best practices to virtualization in a service management world.

Virtualization 2.0 Is All About Manageability

With virtual infrastructures becoming prevalent in production environments and often supporting critical business services, the second phase of virtualization is here. In Virtualization 2.0, it's all about manageability. The shifting emphasis to business service management rather than just virtual machine management means that it is no longer sufficient to simply monitor the uptime or resource usage of virtual machines and servers and believe that the entire IT infrastructure is working well.

Web Services Manifesto - RESTful Architecture and Programmable Web

I don't need to go into too much detail here about what exactly REST is - I know that most of the readers of this blog are well versed in Web Services technologies and architectural patterns. The thing that I want to cover is that REST is an architectural decision, it is not a protocol or a wire format or even an industry standard. It is a set of recommendations for how you organize the information exposed by your Web Services. Before I go into detail here, I personally think that REST is the way to go. Unless you have a particular need to be strapped into the SOAP/WS-* roller coaster, your Web Service should be exposing resources via RESTful URLs. I can't imagine why people would chose not to do so.

White Paper: "Infrastructure Optimization via Desktop Virtualization"

To address this issue of improving capacity utilization, more and more companies and information technology departments are implementing infrastructure solutions, such as server and storage consolidation through virtualization. With the promise of a new day rising upon the desktop environment, companies are taking a 'return-to-the-mainframe' mentality, leveraging these same solutions, and in many cases, the same IT skills, to re-deploy desktops. Via mainframe-inspired System x x86 server hardware located within the datacenter, the entire desktop operating system and application stack can be virtualized, delivering the complete multimedia experience that users have become accustomed to, but without the security concerns and spiraling management costs of the traditional 'fat client' PC approach.

The Missing Piece in Cloud Computing: Middleware Virtualization

To achieve the full potential of 'cloud computing' we need a broader definition of virtualization, and that is the complete de-coupling of the logical components of an application (represented by the software stack) and the physical resources. In the case of middleware, whether it is data access, messaging or the business logic, the physical location of the resources should not matter to the developer and to the end user. This is not a trivial thing to do, especially when it comes to data-intensive, stateful (transactional or otherwise) applications and services. In this session we will explore the challenges and propose a solution, including a live demo.

Business Resiliency in Blended Physical/Virtual Environments

While virtual machines continue to proliferate in enterprise data centers with great results, high-powered physical servers aren't going away. Most enterprise data centers are in fact 'blended environments,' with some application services running on VMs, while often more mission-critical applications continue to run on physical servers. This session will explore approaches to manage both virtual AND physical servers in exactly the same fashion - creating truly resilient environments regardless of platform.

Introducing Automated Business Process Discovery: Step #1 To Process Improvement

In a recent study, CIOs ranked 'improving business processes' as their #1 priority for 2008. But the big question has always been - How does one get started with a BPM initiative? The traditional approach has been to engage external consultants and to dedicate significant time and resources to map out how a company does business. Very often, the outcome is delayed and riddled with inaccuracies. Keith Swenson, Fujitsu's Chief Architect, talks about Fujitsu's new Automated Business Process Discovery Offering, that helps companies: Quickly visualize existing business processes ? in less than two weeks, Identify process bottlenecks, steps that get repeated, and 'loop-backs' in processes, and Pin point areas to focus your process improvement initiative on to demonstrate quick ROI.

Which Technologies Will Carry the Rich Internet Torch?

If Gartner's assessment of AJAX's position on the Hype Cycle is correct, then the days when AJAX is the only game in town are over. Enter the age of what Anne Thomas Manes of the Burton Group calls 'Fit Clients' - a hybrid of Thick Clients (a.k.a. Fat Clients) and Thin Clients (HTML and RIA). Adobe AIR is definitely a Fit Client technology, but it's not the first and won't be the only player in this space.

iPhone 3G - MobileMe vs. Live Mesh

So how does this relate to MobileMe? MobileMe is, according to Phil Schiller's keynote, 'Exchange for the rest of us'. What this means is that using MobileMe, you will receive push contacts, push e-mail, and push calendar notifications. This will work with any MobileMe-aware application, including Outlook on the PC and iCal, Mail, and Address Book on the Mac and iPhone. This also includes the old iDisk functionality which allows you to share files among all of your devices using file synchronization technologies. iDisk works, but don't ever try to code directly on an iDisk folder with Xcode unless you have a back-up. Hopefully this peculiarity has been fixed in MobileMe.

AJAX RIA News - Silverlight Hits Its First Birthday

It was in April 2007 we launched Silverlight 1.0, and it's now May 2008 and we're already looking forward to a v2 release (exciting amount of great features). It personally feels like the 1.0 launch was 2-3 years ago, but it's kind of surreal to think that Silverlight has really only just hit its first birthday! (not only did the baby mature fast, but it's gained many fans a long the way!)

SOA World - The End of Middleware As You Know It

Dramatic industry changes - including vendor consolidation, outsourcing and the growth of open source - highlight the need for a better way. When a SOA implementation costs too much, the culprit is often the old-fashioned, proprietary and expensive server or hub-based middleware. A better, distributed approach to SOA infrastructure can help reduce cost and increase the benefit of SOA implementation. This presentation includes an overview of the industry trends driving us toward SOA and explains why traditional middleware systems do not meet modern requirements as well as a distributed approach to SOA infrastructure.
