Zend Studio for Eclipse

In my many years of programming, almost 20 years now, I have used countless integrated development environments (IDEs). I have used everything from a simple text editor all the way up to the high-end IDEs that Sybase, IBM, and Oracle use. More recently I have come to embrace the open source movement and development in Web environments. My programming language of choice for these days is PHP, so it stands to reason that I would be looking for an IDE. Like so many other developers I followed the path of looking for the pinnacle of IDEs for PHP. I started with basic text editors, moved into text editors with code colorizations, and then into project-based development environments, and finally to a fully robust IDE. The one that I've been using for a few years now is Zend's Studio Professional.

How Has Open Source Helped or Hindered?

Open source provides an incredible amount of technical leverage for small companies. No matter who productive your rock-star programmers are and no matter how much judo you apply to your problems, solid infrastructure takes a long time and benefits immensely from broad involvement. It really does take a village to raise great infrastructure. The Ruby on Rails framework of today is a lot more productive than the one I was using before it was open sourced. I use features every day created by others, enjoy polish done by others, evade bugs caught by others. All work I would otherwise have to do myself. So I simply get more done for less effort than it would otherwise have taken. The same holds true for the other open source projects that have been cultivated in 37signals, like Prototype and Capistrano.

Sybase Demos Technology at EclipseCon 2006

Sybase will have a key presence at EclipseCon 2006, March 20-23 in Santa Clara, Calif. Sybase will demonstrate Sybase WorkSpace, a unified Eclipse-based application development environment. Along with other industry leaders Sybase will offer six developer oriented tutorials, focusing on real life application needs: topics include building JavaServer Faces applications, Data Tools Platform tutorials, and recounting real-world experiences with developing Eclipse user assistance.

Why "Eclipse Developer's Journal" and Why Now?
